11 Tips To Avoid Hangovers
Alcohol, the bane of the drinking classes.
Here are 11 useful tips on how to avoid hangovers.
- Before drinking, eat a full meal. A good meal slows down the absorbtion of alcohol and lets the body process the toxins. It also reduces the risk of puking!
- Drink a glass of water to hydrate before the diuretic effect starts. Milk can also help slow the absorbtion of alcohol into the bloodstream.
- Take multivitamins
- While drinking, drink in moderation. The body takes about an hour to process a single drink
- Drink a glass of water after every alcholic drink
- Don’t mix your drinks. The body has to work that much harder if it has to deal with different types of alcohol
- Choose your drink carefully:
- Beer has low alcohol, but is carbonated which speeds up absorbtion
- Wine has a higer percentage of alcohol but is usually not carbonated. White wine is safer than red because it has fewer congeners. The cheaper the wine, the more congeners
- Liquor has the highest alcohol content so the chances of a hangover are high. Clear liquors like vodka, rum and gin are slightly better than dark or sweet liquors like bourbon, scotch or tequila because they have fewer congeners.
- After drinking, take two aspirin and a full glass of water. The prostaglandin inhibitors in the aspirin can reduce the hangover.
- In the morning, take two more aspirin with a full glass of water. This helps reduce the hangover and decrease inflammation from leftover prostaglandin.
- Take a multivitamin to replenish B and C vitamins.
- Eat breakfast. Eggs (for cysteine), a banana (for potassium) and fruit juice (for fructose and vitamins) do help. But coffee, tea and soda can cause further dehydration.
