Tubular Bells
- When he was only 17 years old, Mike Oldfield composed ‘Tubular Bells’, which was #1 everywhere it was released.
- Tubular Bells was released May 25th, 1973
- It was used as the soundtrack music to the horror movie ‘The Exorcist’.
- ‘Tubular Bells’ spent over 5 years in both the UK and US album charts, and it has so far sold over 16 million copies.
- Only his second album, ‘Hergest Ridge’ managed to knock ‘Tubular Bells’ off the UK top spot. Mike is one of only 3 artists to have knocked themselves off the #1 spot, the others being the Beatles and Bob Dylan.
- ‘The Songs Of Distant Earth’ was the first ever commercial CD to feature a CD-ROM track.
- Minor planet 5656 has been named in honor of Mike Oldfield.
- Mike Oldfield has sold over 40 million albums world-wide making him one of Britain’s most successful composers.
- ‘Tubular Bells II’, Mike’s 1992 follow-up to his epic debut, reached number 1 in the UK album charts and went on to sell over 2 million copies world-wide including nearly 600,000 in Britain alone.
- Since late February Mike has been working on his Millennium project, which is a musical rendition of the last 2000 years, currently planned for release at midnight on December 31st.
- A Millenium concert is being considered for Jubilee Garden in London at the turn of the Century.
